Memusi eco classrooms

Classrooms designed around heat, ventilation, affordability and the needs of their learners.

Stone-and-mesh classrooms at Memusi

THE PROJECT

Classrooms shaped by their setting.

The brief

Create classrooms for Memusi School that respond to heat, ventilation and affordability. The work forms part of JSM’s community support.

The design

Gurmakh S. Peter designed a wall assembly of stone held within mesh. Gaps within the assembly allow air to move through, while the building form provides shade.

The building

The photographs show the classroom structures and their stone-and-mesh walls in the surrounding landscape. The same materials and details run through the building, from individual wall panels to the covered edges.

What the work involved

  • Classroom construction
  • Stone-and-mesh wall assembly
  • Climate-responsive design
  • Shade and natural ventilation
THE WALL AS PART OF THE DESIGN

02 / AIR

Permeable walls
